This article details ways to prioritise your wellbeing and self care as a solo parent
A solo parent may experience unique challenges and pressure to provide all their child's needs, but the deep bond between a solo parent and their children can be incredibly rewarding. However, it is important to maintain your wellbeing and self care. Here are some ways to achieve this.
Sleep
Sleep is vital for your body’s repair and mental clarity. Lack of sleep can lead to health issues and emotional difficulties. You may find yourself trying to ‘fit everything in’ once the children are asleep but remember your sleep hygiene can make a big difference to your inner health. Try to turn off devices an hour before bed and enjoy a warm bath or journal time before you sleep.
Physical activity
Exercise helps regulate sleep and reduces stress by releasing endorphins. While it may prove difficult as a solo parent to attend a gym, consider workouts that you can do from home or use your work lunch break to get a fast walk in. If you have little children, incorporate them in an at home dance-fit or aerobic workout class. Even 15 minutes a day can improve cardiovascular health.
Mental health
Mental health is nurtured through activities like mindfulness, meditation, and connecting with others. Neglecting it can allow those feelings of anxiety, stress and even loneliness to creep in. You may find a guided meditation app helpful or even just having some alone time with soft music playing.
Mindful breathing
Deep belly breathing can calm your mind and reduce stress. Any time you feel the demands of being everything to everyone become overwhelming take the time to close your eyes, breath deeply and block out distractions. This is a helpful tool for children managing anxious moments as well.
Remember, by prioritising your wellbeing, you’re setting a positive example for your child and creating a nurturing environment for your family.
