Why is good sleep and rest important?

This article summarises the importance of good sleep

Having a good sleep rhythm is crucial for us to feel well, joyful, and vital in our day to day lives. In fact, research shows that sleep deprivation can impact cognitive function by up to 70%. This means decision making and problem solving are more difficult, leading to increased anxiety and stress levels, which then can further perpetuate the poor sleep-high stress cycle.

On average the recommended hours of sleep per night for adults to support optimal health and wellbeing is between 6 to 9 hours. This will be different for each individual based on several factors including how much tension or stress was experienced in the day prior to sleep, along with existing diet and exercise patterns.

People that experience high stress levels throughout the day may find it difficult to get to sleep at night, or to have a rejuvenating sleep once they arrive there. Others might sleep for longer after a more stressful day as their bodies are attempting to bring true rest in preparation for the next.

Either way, it is important to recognise the link between our day and night and to see that it is part of a ongoing cycle that will impacts on our wellbeing.

With the understanding that our day impacts our night and our night, in turn, impacts our day, start by examining your own sleep and waking cycle. Is there anything you could improve upon in your day, to support a more rejuvenating sleep at night?
